ai case study - how ai helped write my newsletter intro above

in setting up the format for this newsletter i knew i needed a standard intro paragraph that could serve as a template that would be attached to each edition as the opener. this is important for consistency, but also, it reminds the reader with each new edition, WHY they are subscribed to the newsletter.

but i didn't want to write it. that's what artificial intelligence is for. if not to write it completely, to at least help me get it started and provide some brain unblocking.

but there are a few different options right now to assist with this and that's what the Stable Confusion™ newsletter is all about, un-confusing the confusing.

let me break down my approach to creating the opening paragraph to this newsletter.

first i headed over to openai.com and typed in this request:

"write an opening paragraph for a newsletter that covers AI dad jokes, AI current news, how to leverage AI to improve your life, and examples of generative AI"

i repeated this step for each of their language models to see what the different results would be. did you know that Open AI maintains different models of complexity for writing prompts? there are four of them currently and they all have different strengths, areas of focus and pricing to them.

in order of strength:

text-davinci-003

**the content writing model is built and trained with tens of thousands of writing prompts**.*** this model is ideal for product names, short summaries on events and use cases that involve substantial amounts of written content

text-curie-001

**written using journalistic text generators**.*** ideal for summarizing information, policy documents or about products.

text-babbage-001

**designed to quickly generate dialogue for characters**.*** for example, this script would work well to generate a conversation between a child and a grandparent or a dialogue between two children.

text-ada-001

**designed to generate human readable prose**.*** for example, this script would work well to generate the description of an image or other image based task such as describing a painting or drawing.

what i got in return from each model was basic and not inspiring enough to use as a starting point for the newsletter. feeling uninspired, i hopped over to the chatGPT site to enter the same text prompt to see what it came up with.

chatGPT actually gave me the most to work off of in this case as shown below. if you squint real hard you can actually see where i've taken some inspiration from the chatGPT sample as i write the intro to this week's newsletter...

after i highlighted the text i wanted to use, i headed over to jenni.ai and pasted in the text one by one and let Jenni help me with any suggested text that might be helpful in this case.

happy with my final version i pasted it into the beehiiv newsletter editor and started crafting the rest of this newsletter. now, you may read that paragraph and think to yourself, "i could have wrote that myself in a few minutes". if you are a great writer then you should do what is the most efficient for you, but not everyone is great at writing. ai can help those who are not.

in this case, i took some time to craft the paragraph using ai tools to illustrate what was possible, but also, because i knew i was only going to write this once and then use it over and over agin so i wanted to get it right.

ai case study - i used chatGPT to write a recommendation letter for a former employee

i've been running a lean and mean SaaS business now for the last 7+ years. we're an eCommerce application doing about $1.2M in annual recurring revenue each year.

my entire team is contracted and lives outside the united states. one of the more tenured customer service managers moved on from us (on good terms) to pursue a discipline in coding. he just recently asked me for a LOR (letter of recommendation) for entry into several graduate schools he was applying to, including Harvard.

i was dreading writing this letter. and not because he wasn't worthy of it, but because i'm so damn busy. although i'm a good writer in general, i knew that if i wanted to give him the recommendation letter he deserved i needed to take my time to craft one that stood out from the crowd. i had a feeling it was going to be tough because i wasn't going to be able to simply send a standard email.

enter chatGPT.

I prompted it as follows:

please write a letter of recommendation for a male employee named _______ _______ who has vast experience in customer service, managing teams of support representatives, and who has the technical aptitude.

and here was the response i got:

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to recommend _______ ________ for any position requiring strong customer service skills, team management experience, and technical aptitude.

In his time working with our company, _______ has consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to handle customer inquiries and complaints with empathy and professionalism. His calm and patient demeanor, combined with his deep understanding of our products and services, has earned him a reputation as one of the best support representatives on our team.

In addition to his impressive customer service skills, Aditya has also proven himself to be an excellent team leader. He has successfully managed teams of support representatives, consistently setting a positive example and effectively communicating expectations and goals. His technical aptitude has also been a valuable asset, as he can quickly troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.

Overall, I do not doubt that ________ would be an asset to any team. He is a dedicated and hardworking employee who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the satisfaction of both customers and colleagues. I highly recommend him for any position that would benefit from his skills and experience.

mind blown - that's the kind of professional recommendation letter i'd be proud to send to prospective employers. thank you so much for making this so easy.
